Thinking This Will be the Year of the Smash Factor
Maybe the concept is talked about more by golfers and gear sellers than I’m realizing, but in general the Smash Factor seems undersold as a concept. We quoted the clubfitting expert Brian Anderson, of Brian’s Precision Golf in Stuart, Florida, …

Cleveland Golf 588 Forged Wedge
There’s a feeling of all’s-right-with-the-world now that Cleveland ‘s out with a wedge that reincarnates the beloved old 588—only this new model is forged. It’s a funny thing with wedge clubheads. Forged has a softness advantage, cast means your grooves …
McIroy Plays Hurt at the PGA
Reminding me of Greg Norman’s exit-causing injury at the 1988 U.S. Open at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., Rory McIlroy twanged his wrist in similar fashion at the PGA Championship this afternoon. In the broadcast booth, there was concern …
Polara’s Self-Correcting Golf Ball Gets Some Buzz from the Good, Gray New York Times
Bill Pennington, the New York Times “golf lifestyle” writer, has an odd beat to cover. Writing for the archetypal of-record daily, he is charged with producing golf stories that a monthly magazine could handle with much more ease and flexibility. …
Cleveland Golf Facebook Page Asks ‘What’s Best about Masters Week?’
Such a cool and simple question, and yet it’s possible to read the answers and think: “No, dude, that’s not the best thing, that’s down the list a ways.” If you want give them a scroll the comments are right …

Great Excuse to Show a Picture of Heidi Watney
The well-admired baseball and golf writer Thomas Boswell titled one his books, “Why Time Begins on Opening Day.” Boswell must have secretly believed the same about Thursday of Masters week. If you agree, and if you were tapping your toe waiting for the start of both the major-league baseball season …

Martin Kaymer’s Neck-warmer thingy is called Buff Headwear
It got chilly in the Arizona desert while Martin Kaymer was trying to prove his World No. 1-ness by defeating Luke Donald at the WGC-Accenture Match Play. Donald held him off to take the title, but the two players got …

Kaymer, Donald Showing the White Clubhead—A Good Look ?
As the PGA Tour season gets revved up, TaylorMade’s move to the “ghost” look of white-colored clubheads is increasingly on display. The amount of air time Martin Kaymer and Luke Donald will be getting in the final of the WGC-Accenture …

Mickelson’s PING Groove Gambit, as Finchem Saw It
Comes word from examiner.com that Phil Mickelson won’t use any of his vintage PING Eye2 wedges in this week’s Northern Trust Open in L.A. Mickelson’s defense of his no-U-groove loophole use was pretty convincing, in my view–if you’ve got a taste for eloquent …

“Hey, Let Me Try That Driver”
Golf etiquette can get fussy and old-ladyish, I’ll admit. (Even though I once wrote an entire book on the subject—many a long year ago.) So, yeah, nitpicking isn’t good.
That being said, I’ve got a couple of sometime golf buddies who …

Getting rid of older clubs -- tough to do !
Took a look at a staff-bag filled with clubs that are about five to 20 years old, down in the basement today, and thought how much I'd like to be rid of it. Difficulty pulling the trigger, however. Most of them were custom-fit for me, and although my swing has changed and they aren't right anymore... having trouble saying good-bye. Also, where...

Does anybody ever adjust those adjustable clubs??
I've had my TaylorMade R11 for about six weeks and taken to the range and out to play a bunch of times. Basicallly hit it well and get a lot better performance than with my old driver. Odd thing is that even when it's not going quite straight I never think about pulling out the old wrench and altering the face angle, or anything like that. A c...

Actually telling one golf ball from another ?
I was trying to think the other day how many free golf balls I've been given by companies over my 25 years in golf journalism. It's got to be in the thousands. And of course we get all brands to sample. I'm also trying to figure out, with my high 80s / low 90s golf game, how well I can really tell one model from another. The ProV1 is the brai...

Hitting it Flush --- Practice with impact decals helps
The range where I hit balls used to sell impact decals for your iron and wood faces, now for some reason they don't. If you haven't gone through a few practice sessions using these things, you're missing out. The give excellent feedback. Some days it's a little sad how un-centered my hits are, but at least I know enough to make adjustments.

Golf Equipment Wear & Tear -- that we don't actually mind
I saw Shagball's comment about losing his putter cover and being just as glad the thing was gone. Made me think about golf-gear stuff that we "put up with" when in fact it's more than that --- might be an unconscious wish for our golf stuff to get worn and comfortable. My Sun Mountain carry bag, for example, has somewhat shaky legs.... ...

Concerned about season-long practice on mats not grass
There's a great range near where I live but it only has the artificial surface to hit off. I don't mind that my irons turn all green, it's that worrisome feeling that I'm hitting it fat every time and getting away with it. As the summer goes on I find I keep hitting thinner and thinner. No alternative in the area, so I'll just deal with it ...

I was ready for my big close-up at the TaylorMade Performance Lab
Spent a week at Reynolds Plantation, a knockout resort community on Lake Oconee in Georgia, where they've got a Ritz-Carlton Lodge, all the golf you could ever want to play and a TaylorMade Performance Lab. This was what you call a "Golf Road Warriors" trip--something we do over at the affiliate site, TheAPosition.com. Anyway I've been stret...

Early spring means I'll have to dedicate myself -- unfortunately
As John was saying in the thread about Tavistock, the northern tier of the U.S. is powering out of a non-winter into an early spring that's as warm as summer. I'm used to golf seasons that don't really get the proper weather until past Mother's Day. This year is different. Heavy practice can begin immediately. Buying a "range plan" is tota...

Did my sickening pull-hook survive the winter ??
Golf courses in New England are all open -- even in Maine. That means I will be heading back to the range in the next few days. Problem is, over the last month of 2011 season I was fighting a left + more left issue. Ball starting out one yard right of target line then developing a MIND OF ITS OWN and high-hooking into all kinds of jail. &nb...

Wedges by Roger Cleveland, Callaway-style
I let one season go by without acting on my urge to get a couple of Callaway X Series JAWS wedges. Might not do that again. I'm thinking about those super-tighly spaced grooves on the face (21 of 'em), plus all these reduced-bounce versions and other special sole grinds you can pick from, plus that action-figure look on t...

Owning a Driver with a 5-degree Loft Stamp
I was just looking at something I got sent by the Long Drivers of America. It's a promo for the Speedline 9088A from Adams. They bill it as "the official drivers of the longest golfers on earth." Man I would love to see what would happen if I gave this driver a big-bucket's worth of effort at ball-hitting. The stock lofts on the thing a...

Blackhawk Putter from Orion Golf -- Buzz Freakout
This is maybe not totally legit as a shout-out for something new at the PGA Show, because I never got a chance to try the product myself, but beware of this line of putters from Orion Golf, a central Florida-based company. I haven't seen a grassroots style enthusiasm for a new short-game club --wedge or putter-- like this in a long time. These ...

Would Tiger Woods Part with Nike ?? If So, Then What ??
Obviously, for the big Swoosh machine to cut ties with Tiger is a much bigger decision than it would have been for Accenture or Tag Heuer, so, may never happen. What's Wrong with a 16-Year-Old Winning on the LPGA Tour ?? Nuthin'
Don't have too much to say about $200,000 won by Lexi Thompson, age 16, for finishing first at the Navistar LPGA Classic down in Alabammy. She's a little bit like Tiger Woods, in the areas of talent and confidence, except I'm thinking she will turn out to be a nice person.
